Milton Football Team Celebrated as Top Public-School Program
Milton, Georgia – It’s been more than two weeks since the Milton High School football team last took the field, but the excitement doesn’t seem to fade. On Saturday, the Eagles were recognized as the No. 1 public-school team in the country according to an influential end-of-season poll. This commendation arrives after an impressive season where the team secured the Georgia Class 5A championship with a perfect 15-0 record.
In a thrilling championship game held on December 17, Milton earned a victory with a score of 56-35 against Hughes, solidifying their place at the top. Their successful season has not only earned them a championship title but has also highlighted the strength of Georgia’s public school football landscape. Four other Georgia teams made the cut for the national top ten, showcasing the competitive spirit in the state. Grayson, the Class 6A champion, ranked fifth, while Carrollton and Buford held the eighth and ninth spots, respectively.
In total, an impressive eleven teams from Georgia ranked in the top 100. Notable mentions include Lee County at 25th, Douglas County at 32nd, and Hughes at 34th. The continued success of these public school teams demonstrates that Georgia is able to compete fiercely on a national level, often challenging the dominance of elite private schools in other states.
While many of the top teams across the nation are private institutions, with names like Mater Dei, the achievements of Milton and other Georgia schools signify that public school football can thrive. The commitment and talent within Georgia’s high school football program promise a bright future and ongoing competition.
