Jasper, Indiana – The community of Jasper is mourning the loss of Jerry Brewer, a revered figure in high school football, who passed away Friday morning at the age of 87. Brewer, a graduate of Paducah Tilghman, earned his education degree in 1959 from Western Kentucky State Teachers College (now known as Western Kentucky University). He took on the role of head football coach at Jasper High School right after graduation.

Over an incredible 44-year coaching career that spanned six decades, Brewer compiled an impressive record of 368 wins, 105 losses, and 2 ties. His tenure brought significant success to Jasper High School, establishing the football team as a powerhouse starting in the 1970s. Under his leadership, the Wildcats captured 10 sectional and regional championships, and reached the state championship game three times, securing the Class 4A title in 2001.

Upon his retirement in 2003, Brewer held the title of the all-time winningest coach in Indiana high school football history. His remarkable coaching career featured nine undefeated regular seasons and 20 conference championships. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Brewer was inducted into the Indiana Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992 and the National Hall of Fame in 2023.

Jasper High School principal Geoff Mauck, who played under Brewer, expressed the profound impact Brewer had on the community. “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Coach Brewer. His passing affects not just the Brewer family but everyone in Jasper who had the privilege to know him,” Mauck stated. “Coach Brewer’s legacy goes far beyond his impressive record; he reshaped lives through mentorship, instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.”

Former coach Tony Lewis, who worked alongside Brewer, reminisced about his time with him, remarking on Brewer’s friendly demeanor and positive attitude. “He always took time to shake my hand and was admired by everyone. His presence will truly be missed,” Lewis noted. The Jasper football stadium was named in Brewer’s honor in 2008, reflecting his lasting legacy in the community.

The Jasper community offers its deepest condolences to Brewer’s family during this difficult time, standing together in remembrance of a coach who dedicated his life to the sport and the players he guided.
