In Columbus, Texas, Grayson Rigdon, a standout athlete, has made headlines by committing to the University of Wyoming to continue his sports career in both football and basketball. Rigdon, who has been named the three-time state player of the year in six-man football, recently made the jump to eleven-man football for his senior season. After transferring to Columbus High School, he led the Cardinals to a class 3A Division I state championship while rushing for over 2,000 yards during the season.
At five-foot-eleven and 185 pounds, the 19-year-old running back impressed college scouts and received multiple offers, including one from North Carolina State, a member of the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference. However, Grayson ultimately chose Wyoming, where he will also have the chance to join the Cowboys’ basketball team. When asked about his choice, Rigdon admitted it was a tough decision, saying, “Definitely”, referring to the challenge of turning down NC State.
Wyoming’s football coach, Jay Sawvel, emphasized the collaboration between the football and basketball programs in securing Rigdon’s commitment. The discussion between coaches led to a mutual understanding of how Grayson could benefit both teams.
Despite his desire to enroll early and start his college football career, Rigdon decided to stay and complete his senior year playing basketball. Last season, he averaged an impressive 45.1 points, eight rebounds, and six steals at Benjamin High School. He expressed that playing basketball is essential to him, stating, “I’m going to stay the whole year and play basketball.”
Over the years, Rigdon has built a remarkable reputation in Texas high school football. He won his initial state championship as a freshman and had an impressive winning record of 60–1 in four seasons. His decision to switch to eleven-man football stemmed from a desire to enhance his college prospects.
Now, as he prepares for his next chapter as a two-sport athlete, Grayson Rigdon is set to make his mark at the University of Wyoming, with the goal of excelling in both football and basketball.
