Smithtown, NY – The Smithtown community is mourning the sudden loss of Jacque LaPrarie Sr., a beloved assistant football coach at Smithtown West and a long-time teacher in the district. LaPrarie passed away unexpectedly at his home at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy that touched the lives of many students and athletes.
For over three decades, LaPrarie served as a physical education teacher at Tackan Elementary School in Nesconset. His dedication to education was matched only by his passion for sports. He was known as a star athlete at Sachem High School, where he excelled in both baseball and football, earning the title of a Newsday All-Long Island football player in 1981. His athletic journey continued at Rutgers University, where he became a talented quarterback before transitioning to safety.
LaPrarie’s impact extended beyond the field as he was often described as a “gentleman”. Friends and family remember his sincere and humble personality. “Everyone loved Jacque,” said childhood friend Mark Dellecave.
His wife, Cynthia LaPrarie, highlighted his character, saying, “He’s an incredible, beautiful soul.” Jacque was not only a devoted father to his three children, especially Jacque Jr., who followed in his footsteps as a standout player at Smithtown West, but also a supportive partner. “There couldn’t be a stronger connection between a father and son,” LaPrarie Jr. reflected.
After high school, LaPrarie pursued football at Stony Brook University before transferring to SUNY Cortland, a decision his father fully supported. His dedication to family was evident as he never missed a game and always prioritized spending time with his children.
In addition to his coaching career, LaPrarie was renowned in the Long Island Flag Football League, where he led teams to national championships, showcasing his leadership and skill long after his college days.
LaPrarie was honored earlier this month with an induction into the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions both as an athlete and a coach. His loss is a deep sorrow for the Smithtown community, who remembers him fondly as the heartbeat of the LaPrarie family and a mentor to many.
LaPrarie is survived by his mother, children, siblings, and four grandchildren. Visitation will take place on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Branch Funeral Home in Commack, with a funeral Mass scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Joseph in Kings Park.
