Wilmington, Delaware – DeSean Jackson, the former NFL wide receiver known for his speed and big-play ability, is set to take on a new challenge as the head coach at Delaware State University starting in 2025. After a distinguished 15-year career in the NFL, which included one Super Bowl victory and three Pro Bowl selections, Jackson appears ready to transition from player to coach.
According to sources, Jackson and Delaware State are finalizing an agreement for him to lead the Hornets football program. He recently conducted an on-campus interview, which is reportedly going well. Jackson has expressed a strong desire to coach at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) program, and Delaware State will provide him the opportunity to fulfill that goal.
After retiring from professional football in 2023, Jackson quickly found a role in coaching as an assistant at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, during the 2024 season. Now, he will take the reins of a college football program that struggled last season, finishing with a record of 1-11.
Jackson’s move into coaching follows a trend of former NFL stars entering the collegiate ranks. Notable examples include Michael Vick at Norfolk State and Bill Belichick, who recently took the head coaching role at North Carolina. There’s also Deion Sanders, who made a significant impact at Jackson State before moving to the Colorado Buffaloes.
During his NFL career, Jackson was known for his explosive playmaking. Most remember his impressive tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he amassed over 6,512 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns from 2008 to 2013. He is celebrated for some of the most exciting moments in NFL history, including the unforgettable “Miracle at the Meadowlands II,” where he returned a punt for a game-winning touchdown.
In total, Jackson ended his NFL journey with 641 receptions, 11,263 yards, and 58 touchdowns. It is expected that he will bring the same passion and competitive spirit he displayed on the field to his new role as head coach.
