Santa Ana, California – The 2024 high school football season has wrapped up in California, and the updated On3 Composite Rankings have been released. At the top of the standings, undefeated Mater Dei stands proud as the reigning champion after a spectacular year. The Monarchs completed their season with an impressive 13-0 record, capturing both the CIF Southern Section Division I title and the Open Division State title.
Mater Dei’s dominance this season was evident as they defeated seven teams from the top ten rankings in the state. Their victories also included matchups against nationally-ranked teams such as Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and St. Frances Academy (Md.). The team is particularly remarkable for sending nine seniors to Power Four programs, with players like cornerback Chuck McDonald heading to Alabama and running back Jordon Davison committing to Oregon.
The only team to stand up to Mater Dei was St. John Bosco, finishing the season with a record of 11-2. The Braves had lost twice to Mater Dei, once in the regular season and later in the state title game. Despite this, Bosco earned a national ranking of #6 thanks to notable wins over teams like Chaminade-Madonna (Fla.) and in-state rivals.
Meanwhile, De La Salle climbed to the #3 spot in California after their strong performance, wrapping up the year ranked #16 in the nation. They had a stellar start, winning their first 12 games before losing to Mater Dei in the playoffs. Another notable contender, Centennial, had a rocky start but managed to regroup, winning nine straight games before falling to Mater Dei in the semifinals.
Among other teams, Orange Lutheran faced the nation’s toughest schedule, finishing with an 8-4 record. They stood out with victories over high-caliber teams, including St. Frances Academy. Mission Viejo, despite a tough end to the season, put together an impressive campaign with significant wins and a strong returning roster for 2025.
