Kansas City – In a tense moment during Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a “mild high-ankle sprain” that forced him to leave the contest in the fourth quarter. After the game, it was reported that Mahomes is expected to be “week-to-week” as he recovers from this injury.
The Chiefs, who were leading the game, decided to substitute in backup quarterback Carson Wentz in place of Mahomes for the final stretch. Head Coach Andy Reid mentioned that while Mahomes could have continued playing, there was “no need for that” given the team’s lead. Reid further clarified that it is “not broken, it’s sore”, indicating a situation that is not overly severe.
In his post-game comments, Mahomes expressed uncertainty about how long it might take for him to heal, saying, “It’s hard to say right now. You still have the adrenaline rolling…” He added that the best decision was to focus on rehabbing and preparing for the next game. The Chiefs managed to secure a 21-7 victory despite the injury setback.
Mahomes, who is 29 years old, has had a remarkable career, achieving three championships and two MVP awards in just six seasons. He and the Chiefs have enjoyed significant success, reaching the playoffs six consecutive seasons. However, the 2023 season has not been without challenges, particularly after the departure of star wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
While Mahomes has consistently avoided lengthy injuries, this latest incident raises concern for the Chiefs’ future, especially considering their heavy reliance on him as the team leader. With a short week ahead and a tough opponent, the Chiefs will be looking to navigate Mahomes’ recovery as they prepare for their next game.
