Atlanta has set a new course as the Falcons have decided to make a significant change at quarterbacks. Head coach Raheem Morris announced on Tuesday that Kirk Cousins is being benched, and rookie Michael Penix Jr. will take the starting position for the remainder of the season. “After review, we have made the decision that Michael Penix will be the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback moving forward,” Morris stated. “This was a football decision, and we are fully focused on preparing the team for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.”
The Falcons come off a win against the Las Vegas Raiders but still sit at a 7-7 record, fighting for playoff contention. Cousins, who joined the team this season with high hopes after a $180 million deal, now finds himself on the bench after less than a season as the starting QB. His struggles were evident, having thrown a total of 3,508 yards and 18 touchdowns but also a league-high 16 interceptions, including a streak of five consecutive games with at least one pick.
Penix, 24, is stepping up for his first NFL start after only seeing limited action this season. He played in two games earlier, completing 3 of 5 passes for 38 yards without touchdowns. The timing of this switch is somewhat surprising since Morris had previously backed Cousins during a rough patch.
For the rest of this season, Penix will debut at home against a struggling Giants team that has lost nine consecutive games. The Falcons’ upcoming schedule looks favorable, with visits to the Washington Commanders and the Carolina Panthers to follow. As the Falcons focus on the future, they must also navigate the financial implications of this change. With Cousins now benched, the risk of him getting injured and triggering additional guarantees in his contract is eliminated.
