In Hampton, Virginia, the high school football scene was buzzing with excitement as the Phoebus Phantoms took on the Varina Blue Devils in the Class 4 state championship game. Both teams were among the best in the state, with Phoebus carrying a perfect 13-0 record and Varina standing strong at 12-1. However, the championship game turned out to be a decisive triumph for the Phantoms, who sealed a 23-6 victory.
The game began with an unexpected twist as Varina scored first, taking a 6-3 lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Caleb Wyche connected with Trevon Rodgers for a 32-yard touchdown, but that would be the only score the Blue Devils would manage for the day. The Phantoms quickly turned the tide when Maurikus Banks threw a stunning 54-yard touchdown pass to Romeir Smith, which put Phoebus ahead.
After a quiet third quarter, Banks added a 13-yard touchdown run, further solidifying the lead. Notably, Markus Hopson also contributed with a fumble recovery that resulted in a touchdown. The Phoebus defense shone brightly, limiting Varina to just 168 total yards and allowing only 18 passing yards outside of their touchdown pass.
Banks ended the night with impressive stats, recording 113 passing yards and nine rushing yards. Additionally, Davion Roberts powered through with 26 carries for 168 yards, while Noah Jefferson added 41 receiving yards to help clinch the win.
The Phantoms played with discipline, managing to commit only three penalties, a stark contrast to Varina’s 13. This win not only crowned them state champions but also marked their 11th title overall, moving them ahead of both Riverheads and Salem in the championship tally.
Looking ahead, the Phantoms have a bright future, as only a few key players, including Hopson and Jefferson, are expected to leave the squad, which sets them up for another potential championship run next season. Meanwhile, Varina wrapped up their season with a strong record of 12-2, showing they are a force to reckon with as well.
