Seattle Seahawks Face Uncertainty After Geno Smith’s Knee Injury
Seattle, WA – The Seattle Seahawks experienced a tough night on Sunday, falling 30-13 to the Green Bay Packers. The loss was compounded by an injury to quarterback Geno Smith, who left the game in the second half with a knee issue.
Head coach Mike Macdonald spoke to reporters after the game, stating that while it seems Smith’s knee is structurally intact, the full extent of the injury remains uncertain. “We’ll do all the tests tomorrow and kind of figure it out as we go,” Macdonald said. He added, “This guy’s probably the toughest player I’ve been around,” highlighting Smith’s determination to return to the field.
Smith was injured during the Seahawks’ second possession of the third quarter when Edgerrin Cooper, a linebacker for the Packers, delivered a low hit as Smith attempted a pass. The quarterback remained on the ground in pain before being replaced by veteran quarterback Sam Howell. Eventually, Smith was seen on the sidelines with a wrap around his right knee.
At the time of the injury, Smith had completed 15 of 19 passes for 149 yards, along with a crucial red-zone interception. Although he initially wanted to continue playing, it was soon clear that he was unable to do so. This injury could heavily impact Seattle’s playoff chances, which now stand at 37% following the loss.
The Seahawks are currently tied for first place in the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams, who are on a winning streak. If Smith is unable to play, Howell’s performance will be critical. The Seahawks have a tough schedule ahead, facing the playoff-bound Minnesota Vikings next week, followed by a potentially decisive game against the Rams in Los Angeles to close the regular season.
As for Smith’s potential recovery timeline, Macdonald noted that they will “do everything humanely possible” to get him back on the field, but a clearer picture will emerge once all exams are completed.
