Canton Celebrates Historic Win as Indian Valley Claims High School Football Championship
CANTON — The Indian Valley High School football team celebrated a remarkable victory on Saturday evening, clinching the 2024 OHSAA Division IV state championship title with a nail-biting score of 37-36 against Sandusky Perkins. This thrilling conclusion took place at the iconic Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, marking a milestone for the Braves and their community.
This game was the highlight of a busy schedule that featured seven high school championship games from Thursday through Saturday at the stadium. As the clock wound down, the game became increasingly intense. Perkins faced a critical fourth-and-3 at the 9-yard line but star receiver Braylon Collier dropped a crucial pass, opening the door for Indian Valley. Running back Grady Kinsey took control, making a key 11-yard gain and then an impressive 22-yard run to the Perkins 40-yard line, allowing the Braves to manage the clock effectively.
The Braves sealed their victory with Kinsey’s touchdown run followed by a successful 2-point conversion, bringing their score to 37-36 with just over eight minutes left in the game. Perkins made a valiant effort to regain the lead, driving down to the Indian Valley 31-yard line, but fell short in the face of tough defensive plays. The game was filled with back-and-forth exchanges as both teams showed off their skills throughout the match.
Indian Valley trailed 36-29 at one point, but Kinsey’s determination and talent shone through as he helped the Braves put together an amazing drive. After multiple strong runs by both Kinsey and Ryker Williams, they pulled ahead with an electric touchdown play, showcasing their teamwork and resilience.
The game was part of a historic journey for Indian Valley; this was the school’s first state title in football, highlighting their impressive season. The Braves, supported by a loud and loyal crowd, fought hard throughout, defeating ranked teams like Cincinnati Taft in the semifinal round. Their performance this season included a series of dominant victories, scoring over 40 points in most of their previous games.
Meanwhile, Perkins had boasted a strong season as well, previously eliminating two-time defending champions Glenville from the playoffs. They played a strategic game during the final, showing off their offensive talents and quick passing game, but ultimately couldn’t hold off the Braves’ last-minute surge for the title.
As the final whistle blew, the celebration erupted for the Indian Valley Braves, with players being hailed as local heroes for their dedication and hard work. This championship win is sure to be remembered in Canton for years to come, not only establishing a new legacy for the school but also bringing pride to the entire community.
