In Chicago, excitement is building as the high school football season reaches its climax with the Class 8A state championship game set for Saturday at 7 p.m. The matchup features top-ranked Loyola and York, both teams looking to secure the championship title.
Loyola’s offense has been unstoppable, largely driven by star player Drew MacPherson. Known for his breakaway speed, MacPherson leads the Ramblers in several categories including touchdowns, rushing yards, and receiving yards. Coach Beau Desherow emphasized MacPherson’s versatility, noting that he is not only a great receiver but also a crucial blocker for quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald during runs. With 19 touchdowns to his name this season, he will certainly be a focal point for York’s defense.
On the flip side, York is entering their first title game, bringing with them a strong quarterback in Bruno Massel. Notably speedy, Massel is known as one of the fastest quarterbacks in the state and has the potential to make a significant impact against Loyola’s tough defense. Desherow remarked that Loyola’s defensive line has effectively neutralized strong rushing attacks this season, with other teams struggling to find success on the ground against them.
Not far behind, Mount Carmel is preparing for a showdown with Batavia. This rivalry has heavily favored Mount Carmel, as they have eliminated Batavia in the past four seasons. Coach Jordan Lynch noted that their defense, driven by linebacker Matt Mucha, is at its peak right now. Meanwhile, Batavia’s running back Nathan Whitwell, who has had a standout season with 1,669 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns, hopes to lead his team past Mount Carmel.
In the lower classes, East St. Louis appears to be the team to beat with their impressive quarterback Kendrick Lyons, who has thrown for over 2,400 yards and 31 touchdowns this season. Contesting them will be Geneva, who features standout player Talyn Taylor, a Georgia recruit known for his game-changing plays.
The weekend will surely provide thrilling matchups across various divisions, showcasing the talent and heart of high school football players from around the state. Fans are gearing up for what promises to be an unforgettable championship weekend.
