NCAA Sports Update: Maui Invitational Kicks Off with Exciting Matchups
This week in Maui, Hawaii, the highly anticipated 2024 Maui Invitational tournament has begun, showcasing several top men’s college basketball teams in a thrilling three-day event. From November 25 to November 27, the games are being held at the Lahaina Civic Center.
The first day got off to a dramatic start, with all four games delivering close scores and nail-biting finishes. In the opening matchup, Memphis pulled off an amazing victory against UConn with a final score of 99-97 in overtime. Following that, Michigan State faced off against Colorado, but Colorado struggled, losing 72-56.
Other exciting matchups on Monday included Auburn, who narrowly edged past Iowa State with an 83-81 score, and North Carolina defeating Dayton 92-90.
Day two continued the excitement as ColoradoUConn with a close score of 73-72. In addition, Memphis secured their spot in the championship bracket with a 71-63 win over Michigan State. Iowa State also kept the momentum, earning a victory over Dayton with an 89-84 result.
Looking ahead, the championship games are set for Wednesday, with the fifth-place game starting at 2:30 PM, the championship contest at 5 PM, and the third-place match at 9:30 PM. Fans are eagerly awaiting who will take home the prestigious title, following Purdue‘s win last year, where Zach Edey was named tournament MVP after an impressive performance.
Meanwhile, Duke holds the record for most titles in the Maui Invitational history, with five championships to their name. As this year’s tournament unfolds, each game adds a new chapter to the storied history of this beloved event.
