High School Football Playoffs Back On in Huntington, WV

Huntington, W.Va. – The excitement for high school football is back on as playoff games resume this weekend. After a ruling by the West Virginia Supreme Court on Tuesday, the path to the playoffs has been cleared. The court removed previous injunctions that were issued by two circuit courts, validating the authority of the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) to manage and apply its regulations for interscholastic athletics.

In an email statement, the WVSSAC confirmed that the same point system used throughout the regular season will now determine the playoff brackets and matchups, bringing back some much-needed clarity to the playoff process.

This weekend’s games feature a mix of matchups across four classes. In Class AAAA, fans can look forward to some thrilling encounters, including:

  • No. 16 Parkersburg (4-6) at No. 1 Martinsburg (9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.
  • No. 15 Hedgesville (2-8) at No. 2 Spring Mills (9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.
  • No. 12 University (4-6) at No. 5 Huntington (9-1) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Class AAA also has exciting games lined up, like:

  • No. 16 Hampshire (5-5) at No. 1 Princeton (10-0) on Saturday at 4 p.m.
  • No. 15 Point Pleasant (4-5) at No. 2 Fairmont Senior (9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

In Class AA:

  • No. 16 Westside (7-3) at No. 1 Frankfort (10-0) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
  • No. 14 James Monroe (7-3) at No. 3 Independence (6-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.
