Homedale Trojans Take Down Weiser 27-7, Advance to 4A State Championship Game

In Homedale, excitement filled the air as the local football team, the Trojans, faced off against conference rivals Weiser in the semifinals of the 4A state playoffs. Coach Matt Holtry showed his commitment by sporting shorts despite the near-freezing temperatures, a choice that evidently paid off as Homedale secured a solid 27-7 victory on Friday night.

The Trojans came into the game with a determination to avenge their earlier loss to Weiser, where they had suffered a disappointing 30-6 defeat back on October 4. That loss had snapped a 33-game conference winning streak, and it was clear they had turned a corner since then. Coach Holtry noted, “It kind of turned our identity around and refocused our kids.” This re-focusing was evident on the field as the Trojans dominated both offensively and defensively.

In a remarkable defensive effort, Homedale limited Weiser to just 58 rushing yards and 147 total yards, compared to their own impressive total of 371 yards. Junior quarterback Xavier Uranga led the way with a 10-yard touchdown keeper, while senior Luke Henry made significant contributions with a 2-yard touchdown pass and a stunning 58-yard punt return for another score.

“We just trusted each other and started out strong,” Henry said, reflecting on the team’s decisive performance. The Trojans were quick to take a lead, establishing a 20-0 advantage before Weiser managed to get on the board just before halftime.

With this victory, Homedale advances to face top-seeded and two-time defending champions Sugar-Salem, with the date and location of the championship game still pending. Holtry concluded the match by creating a tunnel of support for the seniors to exit the field, marking a significant milestone in their high school athletic careers.

“We just love this community and everything they do for us,” expressed Henry, hoping to add another trophy to the school’s history, with the last championship won back in 1997.
