Football Season Renewal

Travis Kelce Takes Responsibility for Slow Start as Chiefs Look to Turn Season Around

In Kansas City, all eyes are on tight end Travis Kelce as the 2024 NFL season kicks off. The beginning of the season hasn’t been smooth for the Chiefs star, who has recorded only four catches for 39 yards over the first two games. While many fans are puzzled by his low production, Kelce is taking full responsibility for his performance and is not putting the blame on quarterback Patrick Mahomes or head coach Andy Reid.

During a recent episode of his podcast “New Heights,” Kelce expressed that he understands the struggles he faces and admits it’s a personal challenge. “I put that on me,” he stated firmly, stressing that he needs to do better on the field. In the last game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Kelce managed just one catch for five yards, and Mahomes targeted him a mere seven times this season. Despite this, Kelce made it clear that he doesn’t fault his quarterback for the lack of connection, saying, “If you want to catch the football, it has to be the right play…”

Kelce’s performance has raised questions about his mindset; however, he insists he won’t allow frustration to take over. Last season saw him getting visibly upset during the Super Bowl LVIII, but this time, he is focused on how to improve. He remarked, “Moving forward, it’s just, ‘How can I be better in those moments?’” Kelce’s commitment to growth reflects his competitive nature, aiming to uphold his reputation as one of the top players.

Mahomes, aware of the challenges of covering for Kelce, acknowledged that opponents are making it difficult for him to connect with Kelce as often. “They have a plan on how they’re going to account for Travis,” he explained, noting that while Kelce’s numbers are down, he believes that his teammate’s contributions will come as the season progresses. “He’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards,” Mahomes stated, confident about Kelce’s potential impact moving forward.

As the Chiefs continue to navigate their season, Travis Kelce’s situation will likely be a key storyline. The tight end’s determination to rise above early struggles may not only boost his performance but also rally the team on their journey throughout the year.
