Winder, Georgia – A tragic event unfolded at Apalachee High School on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, leaving four people dead and nine others injured. The incident took place just before 10:30 a.m., prompting an emergency evacuation of students and faculty to the school’s football field, where many gathered in prayer.

The shooting occurred approximately 40 miles northeast of Atlanta, sending shockwaves throughout the community. Local law enforcement has reported that a 14-year-old boy is in custody as the suspected shooter, though it remains unclear if he is a student at the school. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith emphasized the need for patience, stating that further information will take days to collect as the investigation unfolds.

Students were evacuated swiftly to the football stadium after the campus was locked down. In the days that followed, students displayed resilience, with many students from other local high schools expressing their support on social media, as well as nearby colleges.

The Apalachee High School football team, currently struggling this season with an 0-3 record, was set to play against Monroe Area soon. However, the status of the upcoming game is uncertain due to the recent events. The team is under the direction of Coach Mike Hannock, who saw his first season end without a win in 2023, and the team has not won a game since November 2021.

In a statement, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp shared his thoughts and offered assistance, noting he has directed all available state resources to respond to the situation and has urged residents to pray for the community.

This unfortunate incident at Apalachee High School has raised significant concern and sorrow not only in Winder but across the state. The community stands together as they begin to cope with the aftermath of this senseless act.
