Tragic Death of High School Quarterback Caden Tellier Leaves Selma Community in Mourning

SELMA, Alabama – A community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of a high school quarterback who suffered a severe brain injury during a football game. Caden Tellier, 16, endured a critical head injury while playing for John T. Morgan Academy against Southern Academy on Friday night. Despite immediate medical assistance, he passed away the following day.

The news was confirmed by school officials and Caden’s family in statements that emphasized his kind spirit and love for others. “Our boy, Caden Tellier has met Jesus face to face,” his parents expressed in their statement. They highlighted how Caden embodied kindness, generosity, and love, adding, “true to his nature, he is giving of himself one more time.” Caden was also confirmed to be an organ donor.

According to Michael McLendon, Executive Director of the Alabama Independent School Association, initial reports suggest that Caden suffered a ruptured blood vessel in his brain after being tackled during a regular play. The situation escalated quickly, leading to his hospitalization in critical condition. As of now, school officials are still gathering detailed information about the incident, which may take some time.

While tragedies like this are rare in sports, they do occur. In 2023, there have been 16 fatalities among football players, including seven high school players. Out of these, three were due to traumatic brain injuries sustained during games.

Headmaster Bryan Oliver praised Caden as a shining light in the school community, saying, “He was a student, a friend, an athlete, and most importantly, a Christ follower.” To honor Caden’s memory, the school has suspended all activities for the week and held a prayer gathering for students and parents.

Caden’s father, Jamie Tellier, an assistant coach, spoke at the gathering, emphasizing his son’s passion for football, baseball, and sharing his faith. Caden’s impacts on his peers and the community are evident as local pastors, grief counselors, and community members have come together to support the school.

A Go Fund Me campaign to assist the Tellier family with medical and funeral expenses has quickly garnered over $85,000 in donations, reflecting the community’s solidarity and love during this difficult time.
