Exciting Kickoff for High School Football in San Diego

This weekend marks the start of the 2024 high school football season in San Diego and several other regions in California. Fans are eager to see the action unfold as teams gear up for an exciting year. As part of the excitement, the San Diego Section has released its Preseason Top 20 Rankings, showcasing the strongest teams and players to watch this season.

In the rankings, the top spot is held by Lincoln High School. They are led by head coach David Dunn, who is entering his 14th season and has an impressive overall record of 94-58. The Hornets feature four-star quarterback commit Akili Smith Jr., along with running backs Aden Jackson and Donald Reed III, who combined for 26 touchdowns last season. With a strong defense, Lincoln faces a challenging schedule starting with six out-of-section games.

Granite Hills, under head coach Kellan Cobbs, claims the second spot. Despite losing some key players, they still have a solid roster with quarterback Zach Benitez and leading rusher Maxwell Turner returning. The Eagles’ defense is anchored by standout safety Parker Vance, who made 63 tackles last season.

Cathedral Catholic, a team aiming for a comeback, is ranked third. Head coach Sean Doyle hopes for a bounce-back season after last year’s struggles. Even though quarterback Brady Palmer will be unavailable until September 26 due to the sit-out period, the Dons are set to face tough opponents including those from Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Mission Hills is also in the mix, thanks to head coach Chris Hauser. They’re looking to improve after two consecutive Division 1 title game losses, with quarterback Troy Huhn and running back Giovanni Harte leading the charge.

The competition won’t end there. Schools like Carlsbad, San Marcos, Helix, and La Jolla are also preparing to make their marks with talented squads. Each team has unique strengths and is ready to showcase their skills as the season commences.

As Saturday approaches, anticipation builds among players and fans alike. This weekend will not only kick off the season but also give a glimpse into the talent and competition that the San Diego high school football scene has to offer.
