Boise Kicks Off High School Football Season with New Rankings

Boise, Idaho — The excitement is building in the Gem State as high school football makes its return this week with a limited schedule of opening games. As the action is about to kick off, sports reporters have been hard at work ranking the teams in each classification, setting expectations for the season ahead. The first Idaho high school football state media poll was released on Tuesday afternoon, and there are some familiar names at the top.

The Coeur d’Alene High School football team stands tall as the 6A favorite, garnering five first-place votes and accumulating a total of 38 points. Following closely behind is Rocky Mountain High School, who snagged one first-place vote for a total of 30 points. Both Eagle and Rigby share a tie for third place, each accumulating 27 points, while Highland rounds out the top five with 8 points. Meridian and Owyhee also received votes but did not crack the top five.

Moving on to the 5A rankings, the defending state champions, Bishop Kelly, lead the pack with nine first-place votes and an impressive total of 45 points after finishing last season undefeated. Skyline secured the second spot with 32 points, while Sandpoint, Hillcrest, and Skyview make up the remaining ranks.

In the 4A division, Sugar-Salem also comes off a perfect season to sit at the top, earning 45 points and nine first-place votes. Homedale and Kimberly are close behind with strong showings from last season, while Weiser and Teton complete the top five.

The 3A rankings see West Side as the favorite with 39 points, with Declo and North Fremont following suit. For the 2A division, Kendrick has taken charge with a total of 38 points, while Butte County and Oakley round out the top three. Lastly, Dietrich ruled over the 1A division as the unanimous favorite, scoring a total of 45 points on the strength of nine first-place votes.

After a summer of anticipation, high school football fans across Idaho are ready for an action-packed season, looking forward to seeing if their favorite teams can live up to the hype of these rankings.
