Draft Reaction: Baltimore selects LB Courtney Upshaw
With their first selection in the 2012 Draft, the Baltimore Ravens got a pass rusher in Courtney Upshaw who many felt would be gone in the first round.
The key to trading down is that you have to be able to do it while placing your pick in a spot where you can turn it back into talent comparable to your prior spot. That’s what the Ravens have accomplished with the Courtney Upshaw pick. They originally were slated to pick right after Whitney Mercilus went to the Texans. There’s arguably limited difference in the draft profiles of Mercilus and Upshaw (although they are different rushers). By trading down, the Ravens were able to let the board come to them.
Now the Ravens will have to go back to the other side of the ball, and find some help from Joe Flacco. They pick again in the second round.
