Draft Reaction: Seattle selects DE Bruce Irvin
There’s no player picture above. Here’s why: Seattle left everyone’s mock draft in the draft, selecting Bruce Irvin 15th overall. This comes just one year after the Seahawks picked James Carpenter with the 25th overall pick.
The Seahawks are marching to their own tune in the draft every year. It will be interesting to see if they can build a team this way. It seems like a far better approach from a competitive advantage standpoint than it would be to follow in step with conventional wisdom in the draft.
Chris Clemons is in the last year of his contract. It’s not hard to see Bruce Irvin as a package player in year one as they work on his weight room skills and that he’ll take over for Clemons in a year. It’s a good pick. But Irvin was certainly not going to go in the next ten picks. And an aggressive Seattle team could have got him as their second pick. But Seattle really isn’t a big trade up team. And that’s why you see them go off the board twice in two years.
